The island of Groix, or Enez Groe in Breton, located 45 minutes from the coast of Lorient, has everything you're looking for—hiking, biking, diving and relaxation.
In Brittany, fishermen are very familiar with the saying, "He who sees Groix sees his joy"(Qui voit Groix voit sa joie)! Eight kilometers long and three kilomters wide, this island in the Morbihan will enchant you with the beauty of its landscape and heritage. Once one of the largest tuna fishing ports in France, the Garnet Island is now focused on tourism.
A genuine geological treasure, Groix has more than 60 varieties of minerals found on the white sand beach of Les Grands Sable or the red garnet sand beach of Sables Rouges.
You will be amazed by the contrast between the pristine cliffed coast in the south and the beautiful sheltered beaches in the north. The island of Groix is well-known in southern Brittany for its coastal hiking path and diving spots. A number of shipwrecks can be observed in the area including a German U171 submarine sunk during World War II.
The island of Groix is a friendly place to visit, feel free to ask for directions from the inhabitants, they'll be pleased to show you some of the island's unique sights!
Begin your visit with Port-Tudy where you can feast on abalone, rare seafood found in Brittany, a true local delicacy. Continue to the village where you can admire the picturesque framed houses. Note the tuna-shaped weathervane atop the church tower, a symbol of the island's past. Hop on your bicycle to explore the island's other villages and relax on white sand beaches. Spending time on the island of Groix is sure to be a unique holiday experience in southern Brittany for families and friends or for a romantic getaway.
