Citadelle Vauban in Le Palais Belle Ile en Mer - Bretagne sud



It is on the rocky spur dominating the roadstead of Palais, the best anchorage, that naturally concentrate during the course of the efforts for the defense of the island. A first work, built since the Middle Ages by Benedictine monks of Redon and Quimperlé, gave way to a fort in 1549, then to a real fortress under the Marquisate of Gondi and Nicolas Fouquet, prefiguring the citadel which will be born under Vauban. Disused militarily in 1933, it has been classified historical monument in 2006. It has a museum of art and the history of Belle-Ile, a naval hall and cultural events punctuate its visit. Open every day: In March: from 9:30 am to 5 pm In April, May, June, September and October: from 9.30 am to 6 pm In July and August: from 9 am to 7 pm In December and February: only during the school holidays Allow 1h30 to visit.
